A extended cruise through the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was left behind by the ship on a distant island.

The passenger had been hiking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the vessel, but parted ways from the excursion for a rest. The ship sailed away leaving her and went back later that day after the personnel realised the passenger was missing.

A large-scale rescue mission discovered her remains the subsequent day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, together with police and the state coroner.

The CEO of the shipping company said that travelers and staff on the vessel were told that the continuation of the voyage had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and earlier mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be given a full refund, and said the operator was working "to organize the homeward trips of the travelers via specially arranged planes".

Officials also published an revised communication, and said they had "issued a notice to the Commander" prohibiting any new passengers from boarding the liner.

The official said that they would inspect the vessel in the port city upon its arrival.
