Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
